Saving Your Marriage: Rebuilding Trust with Your Spouse During Early Sobriety

Leonard Murphy • January 24, 2025

“A man committed to his growth and healing creates space for his family to heal. Your growth will pave the way for love and trust to return.”

Hey Sober Family,

When I finally admitted to having a problem with alcohol and was in early sobriety, I found myself facing the reality of my marriage being on thin ice. Unfortunately, my marriage ended in divorce, but I am here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way for you! See an addiction can strain even the strongest relationships, and rebuilding trust with your spouse may feel like an uphill battle or even impossible. For good reasons, your spouse just doesn't trust you anymore. The lies, staying out late or not coming home at all, the cheating, irresponsible behavior, not supporting them. She or He are fed up. But here’s the good news: recovery offers an opportunity not only to rebuild your life but to rebuild your marriage. Trust can be restored with patience, understanding, consistency, and intentional effort.

Let's look at some of the ways you can rebuild trust with your spouse:.

1. Acknowledge the Hurt You’ve Caused

The first step in rebuilding trust is accountability. Acknowledge the pain your actions have caused your spouse without minimizing or making excuses. Sit them down and say you're sorry. A sincere apology can go a long way in beginning the healing process.

2. Be Transparent and Honest

Transparency is essential. This means being upfront about your actions, whereabouts, and intentions. Honesty creates a foundation where trust can begin to grow again. If you’re attending meetings or therapy, share that with your partner. Invite them to be part of your recovery journey. That way they can see that you are trying.

3. Take Consistent Action

Words alone will not repair trust—your actions must align with your promises. Consistent actions over time shows your spouse that you’re serious about change. Commit to sobriety and let your behavior show your growth.

4. Practice Open Communication

Create a safe space for your spouse to share their feelings. As my therapist used to tell me in early sobriety "learn to take it on the chin". You are not going to like everything they say to you. But listen without interrupting or becoming defensive. Reassure them that their concerns matter and that you’re committed to addressing them.

5. Focus on Self-Improvement

Your recovery journey is not just about staying sober but becoming the best version of yourself. When your spouse sees the positive changes in your health, mindset, and actions, they’re more likely to believe in your transformation.

6. Seek Professional Support Together

Marriage counseling or therapy can be a powerful tool for helping you both navigate the challenges of rebuilding trust. A professional can help both you and your spouse address lingering pain and learn effective ways to move forward.

7. Be Patient

Rebuilding trust doesn’t happen overnight. Understand that your spouse may need time to process and heal. Give them their space. It's not about you. Stay committed to the process, even when it feels slow or challenging.

Closing:

Your marriage can thrive again, but it requires intentional effort and unwavering commitment. Remember, trust is rebuilt one day at a time, through honesty, consistency, and love. Your actions today will shape the foundation for a stronger, more resilient relationship tomorrow.

Stay strong, stay committed, and remember you’re not just rebuilding your life, you’re creating a future filled with hope and possibility for you and your family.
