Are you Truly Ready to Quit?

Leonard Murphy • January 12, 2025

“Until you are real with yourself, real change will always be out of reach.”

Happy New Year Sober Family,

The journey to sobriety begins with a single, powerful step: Asking yourself if you are truly ready to quit drinking and commit to recovery. Wanting to get sober is not just a casual decision; it’s a life-changing commitment. Let’s break down what this step really means and how you can start your sobriety journey with confidence and hope.

“Your commitment to sobriety is the key to your recovery journey.”

Ask Yourself: Are You Ready to Quit?

Be honest with yourself. Are you ready to change? Are you prepared to let go of the substances that have been holding you back? Take a moment to reflect on these questions:

  • Do you really want to stop drinking?
  • What are you willing to sacrifice for a better future?
  • Are you ready to commit to the process?

Honesty here is crucial. Recognizing where you stand is the first step toward meaningful change.

Be Honest About Your Resistance to Quit

Let’s face it, quitting isn’t easy. Acknowledge your fears, doubts, or reservations you have about letting go of alcohol. What’s holding you back? Fear of failure? Losing your social circle? These barriers are real, but they’re not insurmountable. Understanding them is the first step in overcoming them.

Visualize Yourself Sober

Take a moment to visualize your life without substances or alcohol. Imagine the dreams, goals, and opportunities that await you on the other side of recovery. Picture yourself:

  • Being fully present for your family.
  • Excelling at work.
  • Waking up with a clear head, ready to conquer the day.

How does that feel? Holding onto this vision can fuel your commitment to sobriety.

Committing to the Recovery Process

Remember, the road to recovery is a journey. You do not get sober overnight. It’s about taking it one step at a time, one day at a time. Setbacks will come, but they don’t define your ability to succeed. If a relapse happens, it’s just a detour, not the end of the road. The key is to get up and keep moving forward, no matter what.

Set Clear Intentions

Now, let’s turn this major decision into action. Write down your commitment to sobriety. Make it a declaration of your readiness to change. This personal contract can serve as a daily reminder of your goals and your promise to yourself.

Here’s an example to get you started:

“I, [Your Name], am ready to quit drinking and commit to my journey of sobriety. I am prepared to face the challenges ahead and embrace the opportunities that come with living a sober life.”

Taking the first step to ask yourself if you are ready to quit drinking is powerful. It’s the beginning of a journey that will lead you to rediscover your purpose, reclaim control over your life, and thrive in recovery. Remember, you are not alone. I am here to support you, and so is the Empowered Through Sobriety community.
