Breaking the Cycle: It Starts with You

Leonard Murphy • September 19, 2024

"Most of the things that we struggle with didn't start with us. We don't get to pick the attitudes and behaviors from those before us" ~ Joel Osteen

Hey Sober Family,

I grew up in a household where alcohol was a constant presence. My father was a heavy drinker, and I witnessed the impact of alcoholism and addiction on my family firsthand. My father died at the age of forty, my aunt, who was like a second mother to me, died from alcohol addiction, and my grandmother, my mother's mother, abused alcohol and died from this disease. Uncles and cousins of mine have died early in life and addiction played a major role in their premature deaths as well. So, alcoholism and addiction ran in my family. Until it ran into me!

If you have a similar story, you might feel like it's a weight you've carried with you your entire life. You may even feel like it's part of your destiny, a cycle that you’re powerless to change. But I want you to know this: the cycle of alcoholism and addiction in your family can end with you.

Let's Try and Understand this Cycle First

Addiction can often feel like a family legacy, which is just being passed down from one generation in your family to the next. And it usually is that way.

If you've seen your parents or other family members struggle with alcohol or other substances or addictions, it's easy to believe that this is simply how life is. It feels like you can never change it. Like Its part of your family's DNA.

But the truth is, while genetics and the environment can play a key role, they do not have to determine your future. You have the gift of choice and the power to choose a different path.

It Doesn't Have to Continue with You

I know it's hard to even imagine breaking free from something that has been ingrained in you and your family for so long.

You might feel like it’s just “in your blood,” or that it’s too late to try to change now. But let me tell you and I am telling you from my own experience, every day you choose sobriety, you are making a powerful statement. And that statement is "This ends here. It ends with me."

Your decision to pursue recovery is not just about avoiding the fate of those who came before you; it’s about creating a new legacy for yourself and your family.

When you choose sobriety, you are choosing to rewrite your story, to define your life on your own terms, rather than letting your past dictate your future.

The Ripple Effect

Your journey to sobriety doesn’t just impact you, it has the potential to ripple through your entire family. By breaking the cycle of addiction, you are setting a powerful example for your loved ones around you.

Whether it’s your children, siblings, or even friends, your courage to face your challenges and make a change can inspire others in your family to do the same.

Imagine the impact your recovery could have.

Making sure the bad habits stop with you. Not only are you giving yourself the chance to live a healthier, more fulfilling life, but you’re also showing others in your family that change is possible, that there is hope.

You are creating a new narrative, one where your family history of addiction does not define you or dictate your future.

Moving Forward with Strength

I know this journey is not easy. It requires daily commitment, focus, hard work, discipline, and a lot of courage. But remember, you are not alone. There are countless others who have stood where you are now and have gone on to build lives of sobriety, strength, and resilience. I am one of them.

Each day you choose to be sober is a day you’re breaking the generational chains of addiction.

Each step forward is a step toward a brighter future, not just for you, but for those who come after you.

Create a new vision and deactivate those negative traits that were passed down to you.

You have the strength within you to change the course of your life and to inspire others to do the same.

Remember it starts with you.

Your decision to get and stay sober is the first step to creating a new legacy for yourself and your family.

A legacy of health, hope, and healing. With a new mindset!
